Scots win two more matches at Battle at the Point, help NCAC defeat MIAA 16-11

SANDUSKY, Ohio – The College of Wooster did its part to help the North Coast Athletic Conference to a 16-11 victory over the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association at this weekend's Battle at the Point, as the Fighting Scots were one of three NCAC programs to go undefeated at the event. Wooster opened Saturday's action at Cedar Point Sports Center with a 22-25, 25-17, 25-11, 27-25 win over Trine University before dispatching Alma College 25-9, 25-14, 25-23.
Senior Katie Billetdeaux, a matched removed from a co-career-high 18 kills, nearly got there again, finishing with 15 against Trine. The senior middle hit .500 against the Thunder and served up three of the Scots' (7-2) 12 aces. Junior Sydney Fitzcharles stuffed the stat sheet with 25 digs - her second-highest total of the season - and the Scots' libero served up four aces. Other stars of the match included junior Emily Gail, who hit .500 and had 11 kills, and junior Hayley Nash, who finished with 10 kills and nine digs.
Trine's Olivia Jolliffe had 14 kills, and the Thunder's Samantha Carlin led the team in digs with 16 to go with a 26-for-28 mark on serve receives.
Wooster hit .258 against Trine, and the Scots finished at .333 in sets two and three. The Scots capitalized on a 10-3 closing stretch in the second set, and Wooster topped off set three with a 13-4 run.
Wooster was in the ballpark again in the weekend finale when it came to upping its season-high hitting percentage. The Scots just missed, finishing at .341, which marked Wooster's third time at or above .330 in the last four contests.
Alma had no answer for Nash, who hit .519 with 17 kills. With Wooster firing on all cylinders, senior Syd Case logged assists on 28-of-53 setting attempts, and overall, Wooster had a kill on nearly half of its sets.
Billetdeaux added 12 more kills against Alma, and she finished the Battle at the Point with 45, a total good for 4.09 per set.
Other key stats against Alma included 10 digs, six assists, and a team-leading three aces by Fitzcharles.
Haley Ullrich had seven kills and went 15-for-16 on serve receive for Alma.
Wooster's seven-match winning streak is the program's longest since the Scots had an eight-match one in 2018.
Allegheny College and Oberlin College were the other NCAC teams that went 3-0 this weekend.
Next, Wooster hosts the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic September 17-18. The Scots open play there against Washington & Jefferson College at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
