Richmond, Ind. – The College of Wooster volleyball team opened its season by dropping a pair of matches at Earlham College's Fall Invitational.
The Scots lost 3-0 to the host Quakers (26-24, 25-7, 25-16) and later lost 3-0 to Asbury University (25-17, 25-16, 25-18).
In the first match versus Earlham, the two teams were neck and neck as the Quakers took a close 26-24 first set. Twice Wooster had four-point streaks, including going up 14-10 from an 8-8 stalemate.
However, Earlham was able to tie it at 16, as the teams stayed close for the rest of the set. Tied at 22 and 24, Earlham would then take the last two points to win the set.
The Quakers used that momentum for a 25-7 second set and later a 25-16 third set.
Senior Tamara Turner led the Scots with 11 kills and two aces. Sophomore Emma Fleck recorded a team-high 16 assists and senior Lucy Kinser had seven digs.
Wooster could not get to the same start against Asbury, averaging 17 points per set in the 3-0 loss.
Senior Amelia Mitchell led the way with nine kills and four blocks in game two. Turner added six kills.
Fleck tallied 11 assists and tied junior Izzy Cozzie with a team-high 10 digs.
Wooster will return to action Saturday with matches against Northland College (11 a.m.) and Trine University (1 p.m.).
