RICHMOND, Ind. – The College of Wooster volleyball team picked up its first win of the season on its final day at the Earlham College Fall Invitational.
The Scots defeated Northland College in three sets, 25-15, 25-19, 15-17.
In their later match, Wooster fell to Trine 3-1 (25-19, 25-8, 21-25, 25-11).
In the win, senior Amelia Mitchell collected a game-high 13 kills and four aces. Emma Fleck recorded a game-high 30 assists, and Lucy Kinser led the game with 21 digs.
Wooster had comfortable leads in each set. Starting in the first, they used an 8-1 run to lead 13-5.
In the second set, Wooster started with an early lead and pulled away turning an 18-13 lead into a 24-14 one where junior Izzy Cozzie secured a pair of kills in the span.
Finally, the third set saw Wooster turn around a 4-2 deficit into a 10-4 lead and later had a 9-1 span to lead 23-10.
In game two, Wooster tried to amount a comeback but could not capitalize after winning the third set. Wooster held a steady lead throughout the third set until Trine took the lead midway.
However, once the set was tied at 16, Wooster never let Trine lead again. They tied again at 19 but a kill from Jordan Laraway gave the Scots the lead for good. Wooster won the final three points, which included two kills from Mitchell.
Mitchell and Laraway each tallied a game-high 10 kills. Fleck added a game-high 25 assists, while Kinser tied for a game-high nine digs.
Next, Wooster (1-3) will travel to Kent State-Tuscarawas on Wednesday.
