NEW WILMINGTON, Pennsylvania – The College of Wooster volleyball team swept aside Saint Vincent College 25-20, 25-20, 25-23 to conclude the Westminster College Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Wooster's day started with a 25-18, 29-27, 25-16 loss to State University of New York at Fredonia.
Wooster's (8-7) front row kept the momentum rolling all set one against St. Vincent (4-7), with the Fighting Scots scoring 15 of the 25 points off kills. Junior Izzy Cozzie had five in the first set alone. Senior Amelia Mitchell was a tough matchup for the Bearcats, finishing four kills on eight swings. Wooster's pull away started when sophomore Jordan Laraway and senior Tamara Turner strung together back-to-back kills. A St. Vincent attack error followed, opening a 15-12 set-one Wooster advantage. Later, St. Vincent miscues at the service line and on the attack made it 20-16 Wooster.
Wooster's dominant attack continued in set two, as the Scots had 14 more kills and hit nearly .250 for the frame. Laraway's kill pulled Wooster into a tie at 17, and sophomore Emma Fleck followed with an ace to give Wooster the lead. Cozzie's kill padded the lead back to two, and the junior's 10th of the match made it 23-20.
The Scots took control late in set three to secure the sweep. Fleck's kill broke a 20-20 tie, then the Scots benefitted from consecutive Bearcat attack errors. Turner brought Wooster to match point on a kill, and the Scots scored it on a Bearcat service error.
Cozzie and Mitchell combined for 21 of Wooster's 41 kills against St. Vincent. Senior Lucy Kinser turned in 20-dig match six of the year. Other stats to note included 35 Fleck assists and two Mitchell aces.
St. Vincent had a quartet of players log seven kills. Stacie Ramos had 14 digs.
Fleck closed in on a triple-double against Fredonia, finishing with 18 assists, eight digs, and seven kills. Fleck's craftiness led to three kills in both set one and set three. Wooster's setter was followed by six kills from Mitchell, who added three digs and two blocks to the Saturday morning stat line. Turner's 10 digs led Wooster, and the six-rotation outside hitter ended the match with four kills.
Kylie O'Brien was Fredonia's standout with 11 kills. Sasha Zayatz had 12 digs to lead the defense.
Wooster had its chance to take set two against Fredonia and tie the match at one. Turner's kill tied the frame at 23, then Fredonia's attack error made it set point for Wooster. Turner extended the set with another kill that made it 25 all. Later, a Fredonia service error tied the score at 26. Wooster had another chance to take the set, but Logann Lexner's kill made it 27 all. Fredonia scored the next two points.
Next, Wooster hosts Bluffton University (12-2) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25.
