BEAVER FALLS, Pennsylvania – A season-high attack percentage helped propel The College of Wooster volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-20, 25-19 sweep of Geneva College at the Metheny Fieldhouse on Tuesday evening.
Wooster's (9-10) .235 attack percentage was bolstered by a dominant night from senior Amelia Mitchell. The Fighting Scots' senior finished 11 kills on 20 attempts and did not have a tally in the miscue column in the match. Sophomore Jordan Laraway was just as dominant from a middle position, putting away 13 kills on 25 attempts with just one error. Senior outside hitter Tamara Turner backed Wooster's finishing-heavy duo up with seven kills on 16 attempts.
The third set is where Wooster was nearly unstoppable, as the Scots hit .438 for the frame with 16 kills on 32 swings with just two errors. Laraway had six kills in the fame, while Mitchell and Turner put away four points each on the attacking front. Laraway and Turner kills padded Wooster's lead to 12-8 and came in the midst of a 5-0 run. An earlier Turner kill start the run and tied the set at eight. Wooster's third-set lead reached five at 17-12 on a Mitchell kill. Later, Laraway took over the match, evidenced by four consecutive kills on the scoring line. The quartet-run from Laraway made it a 23-17 Wooster advantage. Two straight kills off Mitchell attacks closed out the match.
Wooster pulled away late in the second set with a 4-1 run that opened a 23-18 advantage. A kill from Turner that made it 22-18 was the lone positive point in the stretch, as the rest all came from unblocked Geneva attack errors. A service error by the Golden Tornadoes moved the Scots to set point before Mitchell's kill put the Scots up 2-0.
Sophomore Emma Fleck's ability to finish from the setter position gave Wooster its first set point of the night. Fleck went to Laraway on the ensuing point for the final kill in set one. Earlier, Wooster controlled early, thanks to a strong block. Mitchell and junior Izzy Cozzie stopped Megan Veon at the net at 6-3, while Cozzie and Turner were the ones denying Veon to make it 9-4. Wooster had three blocks overall in set one, while the Golden Tornadoes' errors accounted for 15 of the Scots' 25 points.
Senior Lucy Kinser's steady defense resulted in 13 of Wooster's 48 digs. Fleck passed out 29 assists and finished a dig shy of a double-double. Wooster stuffed six Geneva attacks on the night, and Mitchell was in on four of them.
Emily Nelson led Geneva with 11 kills. Heather Seubert kept 15 of Wooster's 102 attacks alive and was the Golden Tornados' leader in digs.
Next, Wooster (0-1 NCAC) heads to DePauw University (10-5, 0-1 NCAC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 5.
