Wooster returns home to face Denison on Wednesday
Greencastle, Ind. - The College of Wooster volleyball team dropped a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup to DePauw University in straight sets (25-19, 25-16, 25-13) inside Neal Fieldhouse on Saturday.
Wooster (9-11, 0-2 NCAC) was led offensively by Amelia Mitchell with nine kills. Emma Fleck facilitated the offense with 18 assists. The defense had a nice effort as Lucy Kinser (11 digs), Fleck (10 digs) and Tamara Turner (10 digs) all hit double digits in digs.
DePauw (11-6, 1-1 NCAC) had a balanced offensive attack led by Kaiden Harrington with a game-high tying nine kills. The two-setter offense was firing on all cylinders as Olivia Karwin dished out 16 assists and Kendall Harrico had 13.
Karwin posted a double-double on the afternoon, adding 10 digs while Grace Myers had a game-high 16 digs.
The Scots kept pace with the Tigers through most of the first set, only trailing by two points at several times in the frame. However, DePauw went on a 4-0 run to gain some separation and then closed out the set on another modest 3-0 run.
The second set had a similar feel, as DePauw used short runs to its advantage and built a lead that was difficult to overcome.
Wooster jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the final frame thanks to consecutive kills from Izzy Cozzie, Kora Burill and Mitchell. The Tigers answered with a 7-0 run to force a Wooster timeout, and then added another point to the lead after intermission
The Scots stopped the bleeding but struggled to close the gap. Eventually, DePauw closed the match on a 6-0 run.
DePauw held most statistical advantages in the match - kills, aces, blocks and digs. Wooster almost matched the Tigers defensively at 49-46 digs.
Wooster returns home to take on Denison University on at 7 p.m. Wednesday inside Timken Gymnasium.
