Wooster Resumes NCAC Play
Scots swept by Battling Bishops
WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster volleyball team resumed North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening at Timken Gymnasium and fell 25-21, 25-18, 25-19 to visiting Ohio Wesleyan University.
Wooster's (11-14, 0-4 NCAC) serving kept the Fighting Scots close in set one. Five aces were served up by the Scots, who were a player shy of having the whole rotation have an ace in the frame. Wooster's first came from first-year Catherine Muzilla, and that tied the set at five. Next, senior Amelia Mitchell's ace had Wooster within 9-8, and the score was tied at 10 when Natalie Dieball could not keep an Emma Fleck serve alive. Senior Lucy Kinser's ace upped Wooster's lead to 14-11 and came as part of a 6-1 Scots' stretch. Later, sophomore Jordan Laraway tacked on the fifth ace of the set, but that came after a key 7-1 OWU stretch.
Three straight Ohio Wesleyan attack errors had Wooster right back in set two at 10-8. A Mitchell kill pulled the Scots within one, but Ohio Wesleyan went on a 7-1 run to pull ahead 18-12. Wooster climbed within six at six points of the set, including as late as 24-18 on Mitchell's third kill of the set.
Sophomore Kora Burill and Mitchell denied Mason Campbell at the net to stake Wooster to a 10-7 lead in set three. The duo moved the lead back to two at 11-9 and 12-10 on kills from Burill and Mitchell, respectively. A Wooster attack error gave Ohio Wesleyan the lead for good and was the first point of the Battling Bishops' 10-1 run.
Mitchell led Wooster with nine kills and three blocks, two of which were solo ones. Kinser tallied 12 digs on the night and was followed by Fleck's 10. The sophomore setter passed out 21 assists for the double-double and had four kills on the Wednesday line.
Dieball's 10 kills were the match-high, as were Avery Krause's 13 digs.
Next, Wooster takes on Kenyon College (7-17, 1-3 NCAC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 26. Wooster will honor its senior class prior to first serve.
