Mitchell, Fleck End Year with Top-Five Single-Season Marks
Wooster swept by No. 13 CWRU
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The College of Wooster volleyball team concluded its season on Saturday evening at Case Western Reserve University, where the 13th-ranked Spartans topped the Fighting Scots 25-17, 25-19, 25-13.
Senior Amelia Mitchell and sophomore Emma Fleck concluded the year with top-five single-season marks for the current scoring era. Mitchell's came from 46 aces, which were four shy of KateLynn Riley's 50 from the 2008 season and are the third-most by a Scot in a season since then. Fleck passed out 889 assists, the fifth-most over the last 17 seasons.
Mitchell emerged as Wooster's (12-18) early leader in set one, putting home five kills on nine swings in the career finale. One of Mitchell's set-one kills was followed by a kill from junior Izzy Cozzie, which tied the frame at 10. Sophomore Jordan Laraway pulled the Scots within 18-14 on a kill, but four was as close as Wooster came to CWRU (23-5) down the stretch.
Wooster led as late as 15-14 in set two, thanks to another Mitchell kill. The senior was at nine kills following the second frame. CWRU went on a 5-0 run following Wooster's 15-14 lead. Senior Lucy Kinser's late ace had Wooster within 20-18.
Kills from sophomore Kora Burill and senior Olivia Kitchen had Wooster within 6-5 in the third. Wooster's 11 kills in the frame were spread out among six players, with Mitchell leading the Scots with three. First-year Catherine Muzilla kept five rallies going with digs, while sophomore Natalie Hohman added four in the set.
Mitchell's 12 kills were the match-high, as were Kinser's 14 digs. Hohman (13) and senior Tamara Turner (11) ended the season with double-digit dig performances. Turner's six kills followed Mitchell on the stat sheet.
