Four Scots on CSC Academic All-District® Team
Burill, Hohman, Laraway, Mitchell Wooster's qualifiers
College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Volleyball Release
The College of Wooster's Kora Burill, Natalie Hohman, Jordan Laraway, and Amelia Mitchell were named College Sports Communicators' Academic All-District®, as announced by the national organization on Tuesday.
Burill earned an expanded role this fall, evidenced by appearing in 27 of Wooster's 30 matches. The sophomore logged 64 kills, 29 blocks, and 16 digs. Burill tallied five kills in five matches this fall and totaled a career-high five blocks in Wooster's win over Ohio Christian University in mid-September. Burill later added four blocks in Wooster's home match against Bluffton University.
The biochemistry and molecular biology major was nominated and accepted into Wooster's Student Leadership Institute course. The course's semester-long project implemented coffee ground composting on the College's campus. Burill is a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee member and volunteers with The College of Wooster Nursery School and Girls on the Run service organization. Back home, Burill works at Riverview Frosty Boy.
Hohman emerged as a key defensive specialist for the Fighting Scots this fall, ranking fourth on the team with 199 digs. The sophomore played in every match and totaled seven double-digit dig efforts, headlined by a career-high 14 against Kent State University-Tuscarawas and Westminster College. Hohman added 13 kills at Oberlin College and Case Western Reserve University, with both of those matches coming in the final two weeks of the season.
The chemistry and education major is a STEM Zone intern on campus. There, Hohman assists students and professors during class sessions and creates positive learning environments where students can come for class help during office hours. Hohman is a member of Wooster's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and volunteers with the Wayne County Human Society. Hohman spends summers as a lifeguard instructor and lifeguard in Delaware, Ohio.
Laraway again ranked fourth on the team in kills, this time posting a 1.49 average over 107 sets. The sophomore's 30 aces were fourth on the team and she ranked in the top-five on the team with 28 blocks. Laraway reached double-digits in kills for the first time against Trine University and upped the career-high to 13 at Geneva College. Other sophomore-year highlights included a career-high six blocks against Penn State University Altoona and nine digs against Ohio Christian University.
The communication sciences and disorders major volunteers at The College of Wooster Nursery School and is a member of Alpha Gamma Phi sorority. The sophomore works in game operations and the athletic training room on campus. Back home, Laraway has worked for Nekter Juice Bar.
Mitchell, a third-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference selection, was Wooster's leader with 310 kills, 2.74 kills per set, 46 aces, and 101 blocks. Within the NCAC, Mitchell ranked second in aces, second in blocks, third in kills, and fourth in kills per set. Mitchell reached 20 kills for the first time in Wooster's 3-2 win over Alma College and had a second 20-kill match against Ohio Christian University. The senior averaged 11.2 kills per match over the last five collegiate outings. Elsewhere, Mitchell posted eight blocks against NCAC champion Denison University and served up five aces twice. Mitchell's 46 aces marked the fourth-most in the current scoring era.
The two-time Academic All-District® honoree is a computer science major. Mitchell is researching how video game controllers impact user experience and accessibility for the Independent Study project. Mitchell created a simple video game scene and is having users test out different controllers. Mitchell is an educational technology student assistant and is a teaching assistant for a pair of studio art classes. Mitchell previously researched improving and exploiting cache memory in STONNE simulators at the University of Louisville. The senior was part of the College's TREK program to Argentina.
CSC member institutions may nominate up to four volleyball student-athletes for the Academic All-District® team. Nominees must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, have a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA, and either play in 90 percent of matches or start 66 percent of them.
