Competing in the Great Lakes Colleges Association Championship
Saturday hosted Kenyon College, College of Wooster sophomore Terry
Workman paced the Scots effort with a fifth-place showing on the
men’s side. Workman’s finish lifted the Scots to a
seventh-place finish.
Wabash College, a squad that placed three runners within the top
dozen finishers, scored 63 points and won the team championship.
Denison University placed second with 70 points, Oberlin College
was third with 83 points, Albion College was fourth with 97 points,
and Kenyon placed fifth with 121 points as Wooster finished seventh
with 137 points in a field of nine teams.
Workman stopped the clock with a time of 27:06.0. Twin brother Rick
Workman was the next Scot runner to cross the line in 17th-place
with a time of 27:53.4. Senior Rudy Gilman finished in 21st in
27.56.6, while junior Brian Loy ended his run in 28:55.5 for 48th
position and junior Mark DeWine finished in 51st place in
29:03.1.
On the women’s side, the 5,000-meter race that encircled
Kenyon's athletics practice fields was won by Oberlin College, a
team that also won last year's championship. Ohio Wesleyan
University was not far behind. The Battling Bishops tallied 50
points and placed second. Kenyon and Denison University both held
down the next spots with 89 points apiece and Albion College was
fifth with 122 points. Wooster finished sixth with 164 team
points.
Freshman Suzanne Capehart continued to lead Wooster to the line for
the second-straight week. Capehart clocked in at 19:57.3 for a
12th-place showing as Denison's Brooke Boening took the individual
honors in 19:17.1. Wooster freshman Chelsea Fisher followed in her
classmate’s strides and captured 34th-place (20:50.2) to nip
seniors Erin Fortin in 37th (20:52.4) and Nicole Calderone in 49th
(21:21.1). First-year Jess Yarmosky rounded out the top-five for
the Scots crossing the finish line in 53rd with a time of
21:29.5.
The Scots now have two weeks off to prepare for Wooster
Invitational on Sept. 22.
