The College of Wooster cross country teams competed at the NCAA Div. III Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championships, as the two teams ran Saturday near the campus of Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich.

As a team, the Wooster women finished 20th in the regional standings with 554 points, while host Calvin cruised past Case Western Reserve University 46-73 for the women’s championship. On the men’s side, Calvin completed the team sweep as it coasted to the title with just 27 points to Ohio Northern University’s 114 and the Scots came in 21st-place (587), a three-spot improvement from last year.

Individually, Esther Erb of Case took home the individual crown covering the 6K course in 21:13.15, nearly one minute quicker than a season ago when she ran to a second-place showing behind only Wooster’s Katie Wieferich. Scoring for the Wooster women were Suzanne Capehart, Erin Fortin, Nicole Calderone, Jessica Yarmosky, and Chelsea Fisher. Capehart, who led the Scots in every race of her initial collegiate campaign, capped the season off with a strong 47th-place finish (23:25.45). Fortin posted an 81st-place showing (24:08.55), while Calderone came in 131st in her final NCAA regional meet, marking her fourth-straight upper-half finish in regional meets for her career. Yarmosky crossed the line in 145th (25:21.80), and Fisher was 150th overall (25:29.45).

Jed Christiansen of Calvin took home the men’s title in 24:51.95, ahead of teammate Tad Hulst as the Knights ran to four of the top six spots. Highlighting the Scots’ men’s results was Rudy Gilman, who narrowly missed out on a top-50 showing, as he took 53rd-place with a time of 26:14.20 in the 8K race. Twins Terry Workman and Rick Workman were the next two scorers for the Scots, winding up in 84th-place in 26:41.45 and 109th-place in 26:59.50, respectively. Completing Wooster’s scoring and running together were teammates Jeff Jacobs and Bryan Loy, finishing 169th (27:58.20) and 172nd (28:05.00).
