The College of Wooster teams finished just about in the middle
of their respective NCAA Div. III fields at Friday’s All-Ohio
Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships, held at the Methodist
Theological School and Delaware Golf Club in Delaware, Ohio, as the
Fighting Scot women finished in 12th-place of 19 and the men were
13th out of 20.
The annual meet brings together runners of all collegiate
classifications (NCAA Div. I, II, and III, and NAIA) from across
the Buckeye State. Wooster’s women’s squad finished
27th overall among a group of 41, while Cedarville University
tripped up the University of Cincinnati for the team championship,
and taking the men’s competition was Malone University, also
edging Cincinnati, with the Scots 30th of 42. Garnering the top
honor in Div. III for both the men’s and women’s events
was Case Western Reserve University.
Individually, Sarah Appleton paced Wooster as the freshman was the
32nd-fastest Div. III contestant to cross the finish line and 118th
overall, covering the 5K course in 20:38.5. Only about 14 seconds
behind was sophomore teammate Suzanne Capehart in 20:52.8, good for
a 44th-place showing in Div. III.
Running in a tight pack for the Scots were senior Becca Thomas,
freshman Meredith Shaul, and senior Emily Elderbrock, who ranked
70th (21:36.4), 72nd (21:42.3), and 73rd (21:45.1) in Div. III,
respectively.
The men’s 8K race saw Wooster junior Terry Workman place
among the top-100 total runners. He completed the course 87th
overall, and 29th in Div. III, with a time of 27:28.4. Just outside
the top-50 in Div. III was senior Mark DeWine, who took 55th
(28:14.6), while junior Rick Workman turned in a 68th-place
performance (28:50.1).
Also scoring team points for the Scots were senior Bryan Loy and
freshman Jack Anderson, contributing 94th- (29:45.4) and 98th-place
(29:56.3) efforts among their Div. III peers, respectively.
Wooster will be back in action next weekend at Oberlin
College’s Inter-Regional Rumble.
