Scot Harriers Both Finish 13th at Competitive Otterbein Invitational

Two College of Wooster runners were among the top-100 in their respective races at the Otterbein Invitational on Saturday, leading the Fighting Scots to 13th-place showings in the highly competitive men’s and women’s fields, respectively. The event brought together 21 men’s and 23 women’s teams, spanning NCAA Div. II, III and NAIA schools from across the region.

NCAA Division II Ashland University won the men’s portion of the Invitational with 45 team points. Case Western Reserve University was second with 52 points, Mount Union College was third with 85 points, and DePauw University was fourth with 114 points, and Kenyon College wound up fifth with 189 points.
          
Out of 297 total runners in the men’s race, junior Rick Workman was the first individual to the finish line for Wooster. He completed the 8k course in a time of 26:12.4, giving him a 38th-place finish. Senior Mark DeWine was the next Scot to cross the finish line, as he clocked in at 26:31.0 for a 54th-place finish. Freshman Micah Caunter boosted Wooster's team total with a 106th-place showing and a time of 27:18.3. Junior Rick Workman and senior Bryan Loy rounded out the Scots' scoring with placements of 141st and 154th, respectively. Workman finished in 27:54.8, while Loy wrapped up his race in 28:07.2.
           
In the women’s 6k that featured 280 runners, freshman Sarah Appleton led the Scots for the first time in her brief career, finishing 41st in a time of 23:42.8. Next was sophomore Suzanne Capehart, who took 49th-place (23:53.8), while running closely together was the trio of seniors Emily Elderbrock, Becca Thomas, and Anna Gil as they crossed in 113th (25:12.7), 125th (25:24.3), and 128th (25:26.8), respectively.
          
Case Western took home the women’s team title with 42 points. DePauw finished a distant second with 83 points, followed by Oberlin College in third with 103 points, Ohio Wesleyan University in fourth with 140 points, and Baldwin-Wallace College was fifth with 165 points.
           
Both teams will be off from competition next weekend, but will be back in action on October 10 to run in the All-Ohio Championship, which will be held at Ohio Wesleyan University.
