Wooster Cross Country Teams Conclude Season at Great Lakes Regional Meet

The College of Wooster cross country teams competed at the NCAA Div. III Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championships, as the two teams ran Saturday near the campus of Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio.

As teams, the Wooster men and women each finished 22nd out of 34 teams in the regional standings with 609 and 617 points, respectively. On the men’s side in the team race, a pair of national powers collided as No. 4 Calvin College cruised past No. 14 Ohio Northern University by a final tally of 37-88 for the championship. On the women’s side, No. 1 nationally-ranked Calvin completed the team sweep as it coasted to the title with 42 points to No. 8-ranked Case Western Reserve University’s 84.

Individually, Jed Christiansen of Calvin took home the men’s title for the second-straight season in 24:44.03, ahead of teammates Erik Van Kampen and Nate DeHaan as the Knights ran to four of the top ten spots. Highlighting the Scots’ men’s results was Mark DeWine, who narrowly missed out on all-region honors, as he took 38th-place with a time of 26:03.09 in the 8K race. Junior Terry Workman and freshman Micah Caunter were the next two scorers for the Scots, winding up in 89th-place in 26:40.56 and 146th-place in 27:34.11, respectively. Completing Wooster’s scoring and running together were junior Jeff Lyman and senior Bryan Loy, finishing 167th (28:00.27) and 172nd (28:05.23).

Oberlin College’s Joanna Johnson took home the individual crown covering the 6K course in 21:51.76 following her individual victory during the North Coast Athletic Conference meet two weeks ago. Scoring for the Wooster women were Sarah Appleton, Suzanne Capehart, Anna Gil, Becca Thomas and Chelsea Fisher. Appleton capped her initial collegiate season off with a strong 67th-place finish (24:24.75). Capehart posted a 95th-place showing (24:51.38), while Gil came in 149th in her final NCAA regional meet (25.52.36). Thomas crossed the line in 152nd just behind Gil (25:58.85), and Fisher was 164th overall (26:10.95).
