The College of Wooster cross country ran well in soggy
conditions Saturday morning during the 1st annual Ric Sayre
Invitational, hosted by Walsh University. The Fighting Scot
men’s team won the meet, while the women’s squad
finished third.
In the four-team men’s field, Wooster tallied 27 points with
five runners in the top-10, while host Walsh finished a close
second with 30 points. Also competing were John Carroll University
with 84 points, and Ohio Dominican University with 111 points.
On the women’s side, there were also only four teams. John
Carroll earned the title with 31 points, followed by Walsh (36),
Wooster (67), and Ohio Dominican (124).
Individually, senior Mark DeWine led the Scot men home, crossing
the finish line second overall with a time of 26:33 on the
challenging 8K course. Mike Groholy of Walsh won individual honors
(26:20), while also recording top-10 finishes for Wooster were
junior Terry Workman in third (26:38), freshman Micah Caunter in
fifth (27:34), junior Rick Workman in seventh (27:51), and freshman
Ethan Rudawsky in 10th (28:09).
The Scot women’s highest finish of the day came from
sophomore Suzanne Capehart in the 5K race, as she ran sixth overall
in a time of 20:09. The Cavaliers also took the individual title in
the form of Andrea DiNinno, whose 19:28 mark was 12 seconds ahead
of the runner-up. Freshman Sarah Appleton in eighth (20:17),
sophomore Chelsea Fisher in 19th (21:16), senior Becca Thomas in
24th (21:45), and sophomore Jessica Yarmosky in 26th (21:58)
completed Wooster’s scorers.
The Scots are now off from competition until the Otterbein
Invitational on Sept. 27.
