Both College of Wooster cross country teams finished in
third-place while kicking off the school’s 2008-09 athletic
calendar Friday evening, as the Fighting Scots hosted the Wooster
Invitational at L.C. Boles Memorial Golf Course.
Behind a pair of top-10 individual performances, the women’s
squad scored 59 points, just out of reach of Kenyon College (32) as
well as Edinboro University (37), but well ahead of Hiram College
(116) and Lake Erie College, which didn’t field enough
runners to register a team score. Suzanne Capehart picked up where
she left off last season, as the sophomore and all-North Coast
Athletic Conference standout crossed seventh overall, just in front
of freshman teammate Sarah Appleton, who had a solid eighth-place
debut. They ran identical times of 16:27 over the 4K course.
Completing the scoring for the Fighting Scots were senior Emily
Elderbrock, freshman Meredith Shaul, and sophomore Chelsea Fisher,
who finished 14th (16:59), 20th (17:24), and 21st (17:27),
respectively. Anna Gil also ran with that group as she was one spot
back in 22nd (17:30), and fellow senior Becca Thomas was not far
behind either, coming in 25th (17:48).
Edinboro, an NCAA Div. II power, controlled the men’s
6200-meter event, as it took the top-five individual places for 15
points. Kenyon was next (50), followed by Wooster (74), Hiram
(118), and Lake Erie. Junior Terry Workman led the way for the
hosts via a seventh-place showing in a time of 21:18, while senior
Mark DeWine and junior Rick Workman ended up 13th (21:52) and 18th
(22:21), respectively. The veteran trio is expected to form a
strong 1-2-3 combination for the Scots throughout the season.
Rounding out Wooster’s scoring were freshman Ethan Rudawsky
and senior Bryan Loy. They were together at the finish line, with
Rudawsky 23rd (22:43) and Loy 24th (22:44), and moments later the
group of freshman Micah Caunter, sophomore Eric Stein, and freshman
John Anderson crossed 26th (23:10), 27th (23:13), and 28th (23:14),
respectively.
The Scots’ next competition will be the Walsh Invitational
on Sept. 13.
