The College of Wooster cross country teams began their 2009 campaigns on Tuesday by welcoming six other schools – Baldwin-Wallace College, Case Western Reserve University, Hiram College, Heidelberg University, Lorain Community College, and Oberlin College – to campus for the non-scoring Wooster Invitational. The meet featured individuals competing in four different events, a 4K and a 5K for the women, followed by a men's 5K and a men's four-mile run.

The Fighting Scots top returning harrier on the women's side, Sarah Appleton, got her season off to a good start by winning the 5K with a time of 20:02, edging Baldwin-Wallace's Kimberly Chinn (20:07) at the finish line. Freshman teammate Colleen O'Neil added a fifth-place showing (20:55), while in the 4K, another first-year, Lucy Moser, posted a Wooster-best sixth-place finish (16:05).

In men's action, twins Terry Workman and Rik Workman highlighted the Scots' efforts with third- and fourth-place performances during the four mile. Terry Workman clocked in at 21:48, two seconds ahead of his brother.

Wooster's season begins in earnest with the Ric Sayre Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12.
