Appleton Leads Wooster at Great Lakes Regional

The College of Wooster men's and women's cross country teams each had two runners rank among the top-100 in their respective races Saturday at the Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championship, with Sarah Appleton leading the women, and Kevin DeGroot pacing the men's harriers, at Hope College in Holland, Mich.

In the women's 6K, the Fighting Scots placed 18th in a field of 34 regional schools, while the men took 26th of 33 while competing over an 8K course.

It was Appleton who had the best individual performance, as the junior crossed the finish line in 46th-place in 23:09.3. Erin Plews-Ogan was next for the women, taking 63rd in 23:35.4, while Alyssa Getta (107th) just missed the top-100 in 24:16.6. Rounding out the women's scorers were Meredith Shaul (24:33.5) and first-year Chelsea Denlinger (24:43.9), who took 123rd and 131st, respectively.

The men got solid efforts from DeGroot (71st) and Micah Caunter (91st), who crossed in 26:35.6 and 26:51.3, and first-year Luke Hutchings-Goetz wasn't far behind with his 114th-place finish in 27:02.7. Morgan Clark (28:20.0) and Jay Marshall (28:34.1) also contributed to the men's final team ranking.
