Nate Huston is entering his 14th year at the College in 2024-25, and his sixth as the head athletic trainer. Huston's title was elevated to director of sports medicine in January 2025. Huston previously spent seven years as an assistant athletic trainer and a year as the associate head athletic trainer prior to being elevated to head athletic trainer upon the retirement of Tom Love. Huston’s primary sports include football and men’s lacrosse.
Huston came to the College from Syracuse University, where he worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer with the Orange’s football and nationally-prominent men’s lacrosse teams. Prior to Syracuse, Huston was a student athletic trainer at the University of Mount Union where he worked with the Purple Raiders’ 2008 national championship team.
Huston holds a master’s degree in exercise science from Syracuse and a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Mount Union. He earned his certification from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association in 2009, and his Ohio licensure in 2011.
Personally, Huston and his wife, Mikayla, reside in Wooster.
Dane Moore, MS, AT, ATC

Dane Moore joined The College of Wooster's sports medicine staff on August 1, 2023, and primarily works with men's soccer, men's basketball, and women's lacrosse.
Moore earned a master's degree in health sciences with an athletic training emphasis from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 2023. As a graduate student, Moore worked with a different team each semester, gaining experience with women's basketball, baseball, football, and men's wrestling. As an undergraduate at Stevens Point, Moore gained field experience through clinical hours at Iola-Scandinavia High School in Wisconsin and with the Pointers' ice hockey team.
Moore's undergraduate degree is also in health sciences with an athletic training focus.
Moore earned board certification and Ohio licensure in 2023.
Tayla Thome, MS, AT, ATC

Tayla Thome joined The College of Wooster's sports medicine staff on August 1, 2023, and is the primary athletic trainer for field hockey, volleyball, swimming & diving, and baseball.
Thome arrived in Wooster from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. There, Thome worked closely with the Blugold's football, softball, women's soccer, and women's basketball teams while earning a bachelor's degree in exercise science and a master's in athletic training. Thome enhanced her skillset through a strength and conditioning apprenticeship at Eau Claire and spent summer of 2022 as an intern with the Cleveland Guardians. That led to an invitation to assist with spring training as an athletic trainer at the Guardians' minor league camp.
A Div. III student-athlete, Thome was a gymnast and earned Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association Scholar All-America honors every year. The team captain was a state qualifier in 2017, a four-time district qualifier, and three-time first-team all-county performer at Buckeye High School, located about 45 minutes north of Wooster's campus.
Thome earned board certification and Ohio licensure in 2023.
Courtney Shaffer, MS, AT, ATC

Courtney Shaffer, who has assisted Wooster's sports medicine staff in a part-time freelance capacity for several years, started in a full-time capacity in November 2024.
Shaffer works closely with the women's basketball and softball teams.
Shaffer joins Wooster's staff after working as the athletic trainer at nearby West Holmes High School. Prior to West Holmes, Shaffer was a physical therapy assistant at Wooster Community Hospital and Smithville Western Care Center. She has further athletic training experience at Cloverleaf High School, Medina Hospital, and the University of Mount Union.
Shaffer holds a bachelor's degree in athletic training from Mount Union and graduated from Kent State University Ashtabula's physical therapy assistant program in 2011. She holds certifications from the National Athletic Trainers' Association, has Ohio licensure, and is a licensed physical therapy assistant.
Shaffer, and her husband, Trent, a former assistant football coach at the College, reside in Wooster with their two children.
