Artman One of Div. III’s All-Time Elite Offensive Players

Amanda Artman An all-around skillset to dominate the game in every facet offensively enabled Amanda Artman to log the top offensive career in North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey history, and author one of the most successful ones at the NCAA Div. III level. The Fighting Scots enjoyed a very successful five-year run with three NCAA Div. III Championship berths and four NCAC titles during Artman’s career.

Artman wasted no time inserting her name throughout the program’s record book, scoring 19 goals and assisting on 12 more as a first-year. The fine play quickly caught the attention of award voters at every level, with Artman earning second-team National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-America, first-team NFHCA All-Great Lakes Region, NCAC Offensive Player of the Year, NCAC Newcomer of the Year, and first-team All-NCAC laurels. She helped Wooster to a 15-6 record, which included the Scots running the table over a 12-game conference slate en route to becoming the first NCAC team since 1999 to go undefeated in league action.

Artman’s numbers continued to soar, even after putting in the fifth-most goals and passing out the third-most assists in single-season program history as a first-year. An unfortunate injury limited Artman to two games in 2007, but she returned stronger than ever for the 2008 season. A career-high 29 goals were poured in by Artman, who passed out 13 assists while helping Wooster to a 16-6 ledger and a third straight NCAC title. Artman helped Wooster to its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2001 with the game-winning goal in the NCAC Tournament, and in the process broke the NCAC single-season scoring record.

An elevation to first-team NFHCA All-America capped Artman’s successful third season, during which she broke the NCAC and Wooster career scoring marks, ending the year at 189 points. A league-best 65 points on 28 goals and nine assists vaulted Artman to the top of the NCAC career goals record and moved her within one assist of the career NCAC mark. The NFHCA Great Lakes Region Player of the Year and NCAC Offensive Player of the Year helped Wooster to 17 wins (17-6), the most by the program since 1981, and the Scots hosted a NCAA Tournament game for the first time in program history.

As a senior, Artman became just the sixth player in Div. III history to score 100 career goals. She was featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” in part for that achievement, and capped her career as the first four-time All-American in program history. A consecutive NFHCA Great Lakes Region and fourth NCAC Offensive Player of the Year award went to Artman leading up to the All-America announcement.

Upon graduation, Artman was the fourth-leading scorer in Div. III history with 257 points. Of note, Artman still holds NCAC and Wooster records in all three scoring categories, and she wound up among the top-15 in Div. III scoring in each of her four full seasons, headlined by third in 2008 with 3.23 points per game.

Artman majored in sociology and minored in urban studies at Wooster and started a career as an executive recruiter before following her passion for strategic marketing and business strategy. At present, she is a market development manager with Eastman Chemical.

Personally, Artman is married to Dana Obery ’13, a three-time All-NCAC punter, and they reside in Kettering, Ohio.
