Scots Drop Pair of Close Results at John Carroll

The College of Wooster swimming & diving teams returned to dual-meet competition at John Carroll University, as the men fell 118-105 and the women 117-114 on Friday evening at Johnson Natatorium in University Heights, Ohio.

Junior Cameron Gelwicks took home triple-win honors on the men's side while junior Emma Fikse and first-year Lexi Riley-DiPaolo each garnered three first-place claims.

Sticking with the women, Fikse led a one-two finish in the 1000-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 10:55.90 before first-year Kera Sells hit at 11:23.94 for runner-up honors. Fikse continued her long-distance dominance with a winning time of 5:19.58 in the 500 free as part of a 1-2-3 Wooster sweep. Senior Sarah Padrutt claimed second-place (5:25.86) while Sells came in third at 5:31.53.

Padrutt took home an individual first-place crown in the 200 free (2:01.63), just .08 ahead of the second-place finisher. Riley-DiPaolo won two individuals events with top-times in the 50 free (25.77) and 100 free (55.56).

Rounding out the meet with a win in the 200 free relay were senior Maggie Layde, first-year Kate Murphy, Fikse, and Riley-DiPaolo, who clocked in at 1:41.75.

In addition to Gelwicks' wins in the 200 free (1:44.51) and 500 free (4:50.88), the junior freestyle specialist contributed to the Fighting Scots' winning 200 free relay (1:28.58), as did junior Garrett Layde, junior Ryan Campbell, and junior Ric Reynolds.

Other individual winners included junior Max Koch in the 1000 free (10:23.11) as part of a one-two Wooster finish with sophomore Trey Schopen claiming second place (10:36.40), and junior Michael Crookshanks winning the 200 individual medley (2:03.78).

Up next, Wooster hosts Allegheny College and Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m., with swimming events taking place at Wooster High School and diving events at Timken Natatorium.
