Wooster Sweeps Aside Notre Dame College

Anne Bowers
Eli Samuelson

Inclement weather last weekend forced the dual meet between The College of Wooster swimming and diving teams and Notre Dame College (Ohio) to shift to a virtual format. Now that both sides have completed their respective portions of the meet, the Fighting Scots cruised to a 236-20 win on the women's side, and won just as handily by a 207-54 count in the men's standings.

Wooster, which won every event, featured 14 student-athletes who were double winners, while junior Emma Fikse went 3-for-3 in terms of first-place finishes. Fikse opened with an 18:19.32 in the 1,650 freestyle, and was equally impressive with a 55.94 in the 100 free before capping the meet as part of the winning 200 free relay that hit the wall at 1:44.32.

Among the double winners, the Scots had four men's swimmers capture top honors in both of their specialty events. Sophomore Eli Samuelson touched at 57.20 in the 100 backstroke, and later in the meet, returned in the 200-yard race to take top honors at 2:02.38.

Craig Klumpp's stellar efforts earned the first-year top billing in the 100 (1:03.97) and 200 (2:19.62) breaststrokes, while sophomore Trey Schopen doubled up with a 55.75 in the 100 butterfly and a 2:07.06 in the 200-yard race.

Sticking with the men, sprint specialist Griffin Campbell topped the field in the 50 free (22.22) and 100 individual medley (57.66), while first-year Wyatt Foss led a full heat to the finish in the 200 free (1:50.84) and anchored the winning 200 medley relay that finished at 1:44.73.

Juniors Ryan Campbell and Cameron Gelwicks rounded out the men's double winners. Campbell won the 500 free at 4:51.93 while Gelwicks touched first in the 100 free at 48.07. Both freestyle specialists swam a leg on the winning 200 free relay (1:30.98).

On the women's side, first-year Anne Bowers captured first-place in a pair of individual events with the winning times of 25.64 in the 50 free and 1:00.69 in the 100 fly. Sophomore Cleo Potter was unopposed in both diving events and turned in scores of 154.60 and 183.15 on the one- and three-meter board respectively.

Brooke Brown, Rachel Mandel, and Michelle Sayre all contributed to the winning 200 medley relay that clocked in at 1:56.98 with Brown's 1:12.25, Mandel's 2:40.10 and Sayre's 1:02.26 all ranking as the top times in the 100 breast, 200 breast, and 100 back later in the meet.

Senior Maggie Layde and first-year Lexi Riley-DiPaolo were both part of the winning 200 free relay that capped the meet, and prior to that, won the 200 fly (2:17.59) and 200 free (2:02.16) respectively.
