While The College of Wooster men's golf team is tied for sixth-place after the first event of the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship Series, the stage is set for a potential Fighting Scots' charge up the leaderboard in event two next week, as seven strokes separate third- through eighth-place. Wooster shot a 311 on Saturday at the par-71, 6,486-yard Denison University Golf Club in Granville, Ohio.

First-year Jacob Ullom impressed in his first conference championship round with a team-low 4-over-par 75. He's tied for 13th-place. Ullom was on point on Saturday's front-nine with birdies on the par-4, 396-yard fifth hole and the par-4, 368-yard ninth hole. The Scots' rookie made the turn at 1-over-par and carded a par on holes 10 through 13.

Senior David Roney was next at 78, and he's tied for 20th-place. Roney scored one of the field's four eagles on the day, with his coming at the par-5, 501-yard sixth hole. Roney's back-nine started out at 1-under-par, thanks to a birdie on the par-5, 540-yard 10th hole. Roney tied for fourth in the field in par-5 scoring at 2-under-par.

Junior Ben Foltz carded a 79 in his first NCAC Championships round, as did first-year Tyler Hilbert. They are both tied for 24th-place. Foltz's best stretch came near the end of the front-nine, where he finished with four straight pars, and that run carried over to No. 10. Hilbert carded a par on Nos. 7 through 10, and he had 11 pars on the day.

First-year Connor Mitchell rounded out the competing Scots. He shot an 86.

Denison mastered the day on its home track with a 5-under-par 279. The Big Red have a 14-stroke lead over Wittenberg University heading into event two. Denison's Will Grady shot a 4-under-par 67 to win the event.

Event two takes place on Saturday, May 1 at Westbrook Country Club in Mansfield, Ohio. Wooster shot a 307 – the fourth-lowest score of the day – in the last NCAC Championships round contested there, and that elevated the Scots to a fourth-place finish at the 2019 NCAC Championships, with that marking the program's highest showing since 2013.
