Wooster Dominates Second and Third Quarters, Keying 14-4 Win at W&J
Fighting Scots outscore Presidents 7-0 over 38-minute span
The College of Wooster's defense shutout Washington & Jefferson College during the second and third quarters, while the offense was netting seven goals on the other end, to build a sizable 9-2 advantage and the Fighting Scots also won the final 15 minutes for a 14-4 victory in non-league men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Washington, Pa.
After controlling much of the action during the first quarter with a 12-5 shot advantage but only being tied 2-2 on the scoreboard, Wooster (3-0) started to gain momentum early in the second. Matt Parmelee scored a goal, assisted by Ian Brim, 54 seconds into that quarter, and Aidan Crowe tallied one about three minutes later. It remained 4-2 until Crowe struck again shortly before the halftime break for a three-goal margin.
Just 20 ticks into the third, Parmelee pumped a score in, and a bit later, Brim and Sam Kuhn connected on goals 62 seconds apart, as the lead ballooned to 8-2. Parmelee notched a hat trick at the 5:15 mark, while giving the Scots a nearly insurmountable seven-goal cushion going into the fourth.
Defensively during the second and third quarters, Wooster helped force Washington & Jefferson (1-3) into 20 turnovers and yielded just eight shots. Only three of those attempts were on goal and Aaron Levy was positioned each time to scoop them up.
The Presidents finally broke their 38-minute scoreless streak early in the fourth, only to see the Scots answer with two goals – one by Josh Herold the other from Kuhn – over the ensuing 50 seconds as they went on to the 10-goal win.
Herold struck for a season-high six points coming on two goals and four assists, while Parmelee complemented his three goals with two assists. In addition to Crowe's and Kuhn's two scores, Brim and Nathaniel Miller had two-goal games.
Among Wooster's top defensive performers were Jack Gilio with four groundballs, Levy with six saves, and Ethan Scully, who was credited with three caused turnovers and six groundballs.
Also notable, Erik Barroso had a strong game at face-off, winning 13-of-19 there.
This Wednesday night, the Scots will host Capital University (3-1) at 7 p.m.
