Men Win Fighting Scots Invite as More Records Go Down

Ainsley Wiesner The College of Wooster track and field teams hosted their second invite in as many weekends on Saturday as the men came out on top and the women finished second.

The men scored 160 points, besting four other teams that included Denison University, Oberlin College, Allegheny College and Kenyon College. Denison was the next best with 141.5 points.

Allegheny won the women's side with 140 points. Wooster fell just shy with 138 points, while Denison came in a distant third with 100.5 points.

First-year King Jeju continued to show his presence early in the season. He took another indoor record, this time in the 60 meters crossing just seven seconds to win the race and breaking the 7.04 seconds record set in 2022 by Bryant Douglas II.

Jeju did not quite reach the length of his record-breaking long jump last weekend but still walked away with another win in the event at 23 feet, 1.25 inches on Saturday.

Senior Ainsley Wiesner owned the other broken school record of the weekend, breaking her own record in the weight throw. She took first place with a throw of 54 feet, 6.75 inches.

Elsewhere, on the women's side, senior Drew Patterson was a double winner of the day. She did enough in the high jump, claiming first after reaching 5 feet, one inch. 

She later flew past her competition in the 200 with a time of 27.98 seconds.

Patterson also took second in the 60 meters at 8.37 seconds.

Athena Tharenos won the 5000 meters uncontested with a time of 18:31.94.

Sophomore Evie Sanford took second in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, .25 inch.

Sophomore Sarah Hiestand reached nine feet, .25 inches for second in the pole vault. Junior Daysia Hargrave ran 10.28 seconds to take third in the 60 hurdles, and classmate Igna Mendez finished third in the mile (5:47.65).

Finally, in the 4x400 the Wooster team of Izzy Cozzie, Mendez, Amy Gabrovsek and Tharenos came in second in a time of 4:20.14.

For the men, junior Echo Kidd hit 6 feet, 4 inches in the high jump to claim first. It was a .75 inch off from his personal best. Kidd also followed Jeju in the long jump, finishing third at 21 feet, 3.5 inches.

Junior Will Callender won the 3000 race, finishing a few seconds shy of his school record at 8:42.97 but did break the facility record.

Eric Johnson and Joe Ahmann came in first and second, respectively, in the 5000 meters. Johnson ran a time of 16:37.42, while Ahmann finished in 16:42.54.

Drew Robertson took second in the 800 (2:01.59). Robertson later made a late push for the 4x400 team to surpass Kenyon for second place as he, Cam RayZane DeMercurio and Vell Robinson raced to a time of 3:40.69.

Lorenzo Freeman came in second in the 60 hurdles at 8.52 seconds. Joe Shilts finished ahead of eight Scots to take third in the 400 meters (53.75 seconds).

Robinson finished third in the triple jump (41 feet, 2.25 inches). Rob Mays III took fourth in the shot put (43 feet, 7.75 inches), and Case Baumwart took fourth in the weight throw (37 feet, 8 inches).

The men's 4x200 team finished third of four teams. Liam ReganCam RayCooper Norwell and Jeju finished in a time of 1:32.79.

Also of note, senior Dylan Garretson did not compete Saturday but did take part Friday in the Youngstown State College Invite. There, he reached 16 feet, 1.25 inches tied for fourth among several Penguins.

His height was just shy of his own indoor record (16 feet, 2.5 inches) and currently ranks second nationally in Division III.

Wooster will be back in action Thursday when they host Denison in a dual meet.
