Six Earn All-Region Honors
Scots honored as trio preps for Nationals
Three women and three men from The College of Wooster track and field teams were recently announced as members of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Great Lakes All-Region Team.
Each recorded top five marks in the region, while two, senior Ainsley Wiesner and junior Daysia Hargrave, were the best in their respected events.
For Wiesner, her hammer throw mark of 176 feet, two inches, not only topped the region but the Wooster record books. Three others reached at least 170 feet in the region with Manchester's Carley Camp falling in just behind at 175 feet, eight inches.
Hargrave earned All-Region marks in the 400 hurdles as well as the heptathlon, but it was her 14.11 time in the 100 hurdles that led the region. The time also is a school record.
Elsewhere regionally, Hargrave came in second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:03.45, which is a top five time at The College. She trailed the same person who placed first at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships – Katie Moore from DePauw.
Hargrave's 4,133 points in the heptathlon at the NCAC Championships also put her third regionally.
The other four All-Region spots from Wooster belonged to senior Athena Tharenos, senior Dylan Garretson, first-year King Jeju, junior Drew Robertson.
Tharenos had the third best time regionally in the 3,000 steeplechase, coming in at 10:58.09. The time is a school record as well, which she also achieved at the NCAC Championships.
Garretson's best pole vault attempt this year 16 feet, four inches is just shy of his school record from last year (16 feet, 4.75 inches). This year's attempt ranks him second in the region, behind Centre's Logan Isaacs (16 feet, 7.25 inches).
Jeju ranks third regionally in the long jump at 23 feet, 7.5 inches. He achieved this early in the season at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational on March 14. The two better jumps this season both reached at least 24 feet in their attempts.
Finally, Robertson improved upon his 3,000-steeplechase time on May 9, which was enough to give him All-Region honors at 9:17.62. He recorded the fifth best time in the region and was .19 off from fourth.
Next, Wiesner, Hargrave and Garretson will compete this weekend at the NCAA Division III Championships.
