Scots Close Strong at Final Home Indoor Meet
Wooster's men win final two events
WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster track and field team won four events and turned in a strong finish with victories in the final two on the men's side at Saturday's Fighting Scots Invitational. Wooster's women tied for third-place with 69 points and the men were fourth with 82 points.
Senior Will Callender sparked Wooster's strong close to the meet, taking the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:59.52. Callender's time was over six seconds better than the runner-up mark in the event. Senior Liam Regan, sophomore Cooper Norwell, sophomore Cam Sentieri, and senior Cam Ray followed with the winning time of 3:37.82 in the 4x400 relay. Wooster's 4x400 relay won over Case Western Reserve University by nearly five seconds.
Senior Echo Kidd was a two-event top-two placer Saturday, winning the long jump at 21 feet, 0.75 inch and ranking second in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 2.75 inches. Sophomore Nate Chartrand's collegiate 200 meters debut ended with the third-place time of 24.00. Third is where senior Drew Robertson placed in the mile (4:22.37), and where the 4x200 relay consisting of Sentieri, Norwell, Ray, and Regan ended. Wooster's relay had a time of 1:34.44.
Junior Rob Mays III led Wooster's throwers, taking fourth in the weight throw at 40 feet, 0.75 inch, which was just over an inch shy of the collegiate-best. Sophomore Elijah Stewart's shot put of 40 feet, 1.25 inches was good for a top-five showing. Other top-five finishes came from junior Khaleel Manderson in the 60-meter dash (7.26), senior Eric Johnson in the 5,000 meters (16:13.32), and senior Vell Robinson in the triple jump (38 feet, 6.25 inches).
Senior Daysia Hargrave claimed Wooster's fourth blue ribbon on the day, with the winning time of 9.30 in the 60-meter hurdles. Senior Amelia Mitchell and junior Evie Sanford supported the returning All-American on the team score with runner-up showings in the high jump (4 feet, 10.25 inches) and shot put (38 feet, 4 inches), respectively. First-year Emeili Tarpy's 8.63 in the 60-meter dash was third, while a clearance of 9 feet, 0.25 inch netted junior Sarah Hiestand a third-place pole vault finish. Wooster's top-three finishes concluded with the 4x400 relay, where senior Emily Munson, senior Igna Mendez, junior Amy Gabrovsek, and Hargrave came together for a 4:25.88.
Senior Maia Doescher, sophomore Claire Davis, Hargrave, and junior Izzy Cozzie raced to the fourth-place time of 1:50.41 in the 4x200 relay. Senior Elise Greenwald's solid 11:04.80 scored five key points for Wooster as the fourth-place 3,000 meters time. Sophomore Samarah Destin's top shot put of 32 feet, 1.5 inches was fifth in Saturday's field.
Prior to Saturday's meet, Wooster recognized its senior class.
Next, Wooster is off to Denison University for the lone dual meet this academic year between the North Coast Athletic Conference rivals. The teams square off on Thursday, January 30.
