Hargrave, Sanford Pick Up All-NCAC Honors
Duo adds to collection as NCAC Championships conclude
OBERLIN – Senior Daysia Hargrave and junior Evie Sanford earned All-NCAC laurels on Saturday as the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships concluded at Oberlin College.
The Wooster women finished sixth of eight teams, scoring 38 points. The men scored 48.5 points to place seventh of nine teams.
Sanford earned All-NCAC honors in the shot put, and it was the narrowest of margins that kept her from repeating as a three-time champion. It was a season-best throw of 41 feet, 0.25 inches, which ranks her 78th nationally.
However, Denison's Sydney Flores claimed the title as 41 feet, 0.50 inches.
This was Sanford's third All-NCAC certificate in the shot put.
The 60 hurdles race was one to remember as the top three runners beat the NCAC record set back in 2015, which was set at 8.86 seconds. For Hargrave, her third place time of 8.79 seconds improved upon her school record.
Yet, DePauw's Liberty Scott just edged Ohio Wesleyan's Katherine Dortmund with Scott finishing in 8.734 seconds and Dortmund 8.739.
At the time of this writing, Hargrave's time is tied for 13th across DIII runners in the event.
In indoor meets, Hargrave has earned three in each the 60 hurdles and pentathlon. Overall, it was her 12th All-NCAC honor.
Elsewhere, the 4x400 team of Izzy Cozzie, Ellie Fox, Hargrave and Igna Mendez just missed out on All-NCAC honors, running a time of 4:09.39 for fourth. The third place time clocked in at 4:09.16.
Claire Davis did just enough in the triple jump to score a point for the Scots. She leaped 31 feet, four inches for eighth place.
She later teamed with Cozzie, Hargrave and Amelia Mitchell for a fifth place showing in the 4x200 relay (1:47.60).
For the men, it was a tough race in the 3K as seniors Will Callender and Drew Robertson finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Callender's time of 8:36.76 ups hs previously held school record (8:40.60), while Robertson came in at a time of 8:41.69.
Robertson also was just on the outside of earning All-NCAC honors in the mile run, running 4:25.61 for fourth.
Senior Echo Kidd took fourth place with a season best leap in the triple jump at 43 feet, 1.75 inches. He also matched a season-best height of 6 feet, 2.75 inches in the high jump for a tie of fifth.
Rob Mays III also took a fifth place showing, but in the shot put, throwing a season-best 46 feet, 4.25 inches.
The 400 dash saw fifth and sixth place finishes, respectively, from Nate Chartrand and Cam Ray. Chartrand ran a 51.76, while Ray followed at 52.37.
The men's 4x200 team scored with a sixth place finish. Liam Regan, Cooper Norwell, Cam Sentieri and Ray ran a time of 1:33.66 to shave a little time off their season best together.
The men's 4x400 team of Chartrand, Norwell, Regan and Ray capped off the meet with a seventh-place finish and a time of 3:31.59.
Wittenberg took home the men's title with 139.50 points. DePauw scored 199 points to win the women's title.
Hargrave is in a prime position to become a national qualifier, being ranked 13th nationally in the 60 hurdles. However, the Scots have one more meet to get in before the NCAA Championships, participating in the Ohio Northern University Polar Bear Final Qualifier March 7-8.
