Women Fourth, Men Seventh at Home Wooster Invitational
Hargrave a triple winner
WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster outdoor track and field teams hosted their annual two-day Wooster Invitational at Carl Munson Track, where the women placed fourth and the men finished seventh.
The women were fourth of nine teams with 83 points while the men placed seventh of nine collegiate teams with 55 points. Future North Coast Athletic Conference foe John Carroll University was the men's team champion with 110.5 points. The University of Mount Union was the women's champion with 164 points.
Wooster combined for a total of four event titles on its home track. Senior Daysia Hargrave continues to own the hurdles, winning both the 100-meter and the 400-meter events. The senior beat out the rest of the competition in 14.69 seconds and a season-best 1:07.43, respectively. Fellow senior Elise Greenwald was the other individual event champion, winning the 5,000-meter run in a career-best 18:44.30. Meanwhile, the team of junior Izzy Cozzie, senior Igna Mendez, Hargrave, and senior Amelia Mitchell raced out to the 4x400-meter relay win in 4:04.33 to close out the meet, which lands the quad just inside the top-50 nationally.
Sophomore Claire Davis and the 4x100-meter relay team added two other podium finishes for the Wooster women. Davis, Cozzie, first-year Emeili Tarpy, and Hargrave combined for a third-place finish in 50.98 seconds. Davis also took third in the triple jump with an outdoor-best mark of 33 feet, 8.5 inches.
The Wooster men had four podium finishes of their own. Seniors Drew Robertson and Will Callender went second-third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:24.57 and 9:36.30, respectively. Callendar now joins his senior teammate on the NCAA Div. III performance list, landing inside the top-40, and also climbs into sixth on the program top-10 list. Junior Rob Mays III launched a career-best 141 feet, 11 inches as the top Div. III finisher in the hammer throw, placing third overall and further improving on the No. 3 spot in the program top-10 list. The 4x100-meter relay team of sophomore Will Harris II, senior Liam Regan, sophomore Cooper Norwell, and junior Khaleel Manderson were the runners-up in 42.88.
A couple of the Scots competed in their first outdoor meet of the season and turned in solid performances. Junior Evie Sanford placed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 39 feet, 0.5 inches. Cozzie also made her outdoor debut and finished eighth in her individual event, the 100-meter dash, in 13.21 seconds.
Senior Igna Mendez had a photo finish in the 800-meter run, placing fourth in 2:21.92 which was .001 behind the third-place finisher. Junior Jake George placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.40. Senior Eric Johnson fed off Robertson and Callender in the steeplechase to a fifth-place finish in 10:05.24. Similarly, first-year Savannah Cox was fueled by Greenwald's win in the 5k and put together a career-best time of 20:29.95 to finish fifth. Sophomore Nate Chartrand had his own fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash in 50.66.
Mays also had a pair of fifth-place finishes in the shot put and the discus throw with tosses of 44 feet, 1.5 inches and 131 feet, 4 inches, respectively. Senior Amelia Mitchell finished fifth in the high jump, clearing a height of 4 feet, 10.25 inches.
Wooster heads to Ohio Wesleyan University April 11-12 for the two-day All-Ohio Championships, taking place on the George Gauthier Track.
