Wooster Hosts First Outdoor Meet at Renovated Carl Munson Track

Drew Robertson, Wooster Track & Field WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster hosted its debut outdoor track & field meet on the recently-renovated Carl Munson Track on Friday and Saturday, where the Fighting Scots swept the 3,000-meter steeplechase titles and won the men's 5,000 meters. Wooster's women placed fourth of eight scoring teams with 58.5 points, while the men were fifth of eight scoring teams at 75.5 points.

Wooster's junior distance stars charged forward for a one-two finish in the men's steeplechase. Drew Robertson's 9:42.64 ranked well ahead of the pack. Classmate Eric Johnson backed Robertson's winning time up with the runner-up 10:25.05. On the women's side, senior Athena Tharenos continued to make the steeplechase a signature event, taking the blue ribbon with a time of 11:17.48. Junior Will Callender's distance dominance continued by taking the 5,000 meters at 15:09.25, which ranked within two seconds of a collegiate-best.

Wooster's other top showings included senior Dylan Garretson in the pole vault and senior Luke Henke in the high jump. Garretson's vault of 14 feet, 11.5 inches ranked second at the meet. Henke cleared a personal-best of 6 feet, 4.25 inches to take third in the high jump, with that ranking as the seventh-best mark in program history and Wooster's highest clearance since 2016.

Sophomore Essaie Mezmur was right behind Henke in the high jump, tying for fourth-place after clearing 6 feet, 2.25 inches. Junior Echo Kidd's 20 feet 10.5 inches went in the books for fourth-place in the long jump, as did senior Joe Shilts' 58.20 in the 400-meter hurdles. First-year Cooper Norwell, junior Liam Regan, first-year Will Harris II, and sophomore Khaleel Manderson went 44.96 for a fifth-place finish in the 4x100 relay.

Other top-eight placements on the men's side came from first-year Aaron Denis in the pole vault (eighth, 12 feet), sophomore Braydon Hudson in the discus (eighth, 123 feet, 4 inches), Kidd in the triple jump (eighth, 40 feet, 2.75 inches), and junior Vell Robinson in the javelin (seventh, 112 feet, 1 inch) and long jump (eighth, 18 feet, 10.75 inches). Wooster's 4x400 relay of Shilts, junior Cam Ray, sophomore Zane DeMercurio, and Regan capped the meet with the eighth-place time of 3:30.36.

Junior Daysia Hargrave led a trio of top-eight finishers for the Scots in the 100-meter hurdles, with her 14.52 standing as the runner-up time. Junior Clare Mackin's 16.30 was fifth, while senior Mary Sirois checked in with the sixth-place time of 16.36. Hargrave was a multi-event scorer for Wooster. Her meet started with the third-place mark of 16 feet, 1.75 inches in Friday's long jump, which was the first event contested on the renovated Carl Munson Track.

Elsewhere, senior Drew Patterson cleared 5 feet, 2.5 inches to tie for third-place in the high jump and first-year Claire Davis extended to 32 feet, 11.25 inches for a fifth-place finish in the triple jump. Senior Ainsley Wiesner's 155 feet, 3 inches in the hammer throw, which ranked fourth, was just shy of her school record of 159 feet, 10 inches. Later in the meet, junior Dylan Kretchmar crossed at 19:34.64 for fourth-place in the 5,000 meters. Junior Maia Doescher, Patterson, Davis, and Hargrave's 50.50 in the 4x100 relay ranked fifth in the field.

Wooster's top-eight placements on the women's side were rounded out by junior Jessie Breth's eighth-place 20:17.1 in the 5,000 meters and Hargrave's eighth-place 26.05 in the 200 meters.

Of note, Wiesner's mark of 38 feet, 5 inches marked a new collegiate-best in the shot put and is the sixth-best throw in program history.
