Scots Collect Eight All-Ohio Honors

DELAWARE, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's and women's track and field teams combined for eight All-Ohio performances at the 2024 All-Ohio Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday.

The women's team finished fifth while the men's team placed ninth. 

Wooster's women's squad finished with five All-Ohio honorees while totaling 62 points to place fifth. Ohio Northern won the team title (146) while Ohio Wesleyan (132), Case Western Reserve (104) and Denison (101) rounded out the top four.

Wooster's men totaled three All-Ohio performances while tallying 44 points to place ninth overall. Otterbein University finished first with 138.5 points while Case Western Reserve (97.5), Oberlin (96), Ohio Wesleyan (78) and Ohio Northern (70) completed the top five. 

The men's team totaled three All-Ohio performances and a pair of individual titles. 

Senior Dylan Garretson became a five-time All-Ohio champion in the pole vault, winning the individual title by clearing a height of 16 feet, four inches, just shy of his own school record. 

Junior Drew Robertson added a pair of All-Ohio accolades over the weekend. On Friday, Robertson won an individual title in the steeplechase, finishing with a time of 9:29.17. On Saturday, he earned his second All-Ohio honor by placing second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:58.88.

On the women's side, Wooster captured three individual titles to go along with five All-Ohio performances. 

Senior Ainsley Wiesner won an individual title and earned All-Ohio accolades in the hammer throw. Wiesner recorded a toss of 168 feet, 6 inches on her fourth throw, bettering her own school record by 8 feet, 8 inches in the process.

Wiesner added a second all-Ohio honor by placing second in the shot put, recording a mark of 37 feet, 8.75 inches on her third attempt. Wiesner also finished seventh in the javelin with a throw of 99 feet, 10 inches. 

Junior Daysia Hargrave won an individual title and All-Ohio honors with a first-place finish in the 100 hurdles. Hargrave broke the finish line in 14.48 seconds, finishing a second faster than the rest of the competition. Hargrave later added three additional team points by placing sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.61 seconds.

Junior Dylan Kretchmar earned all-Ohio honors by winning the 10,000 meters on Friday. Kretchmar crossed the finish line in 40:01.87, finishing over 50 seconds in front of the second-place finisher. 

Senior Drew Patterson turned in an All-Ohio performance in the high jump, clearing a height of 5 feet, 2.25 inches on her second attempt for third. She added an eighth-place finish in the triple jump, recording a mark of 33 feet, 7.25 inches. 

Four other Scots added team points for the women's team. 

Sophomore Evie Sanford and first-year Samarah Destin both scored team points with top-10 finishes in the shot put. Sanford finished fourth with a throw of 36 feet, 6.25 inches, while Destin secured a seventh-place finish in the event with a mark of 35 feet, 7.75 inches.

Sanford added a team-point with an eighth-place finish in the discus with a mark of 113 feet, 3 inches. Destin also placed 18th in the hammer throw, finishing with a mark of 119 feet, 7 inches, improving her own eighth-best mark in Wooster's all-time top-10 by three inches. 

Junior Igna Mendez accounted for three team points by recording a sixth-place finish in the 800 meters, completing the race in 2:23.13. Senior Mary Sirois added a point in the 100 hurdles, finishing in eighth place in 16.75 seconds.

On the men's side, four other Scots and one relay team accounted for team points. 

Wooster's 4x400 relay squad of senior Joe Shilts, junior Cam Ray, sophomore Zane DeMercurio and junior Liam Regan scored three team points by placing sixth with a time of 3:31.16. 

Junior Will Callender totaled five team points with a fourth-place finish in the 10,000 meters. Calendar's time of 32:19.66 ranks as the ninth-fastest time in school history.

Junior Eric Johnson scored team points in the steeplechase by placing sixth with a time of 10:14.93.

Sophomore Rob Mays III scored points in a pair of throwing events. Mays scored a sixth-place finish in the discus, recording a throw of 130 feet on his second attempt. He added an eighth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 7.75 inches.

Mays also bettered his fifth-place mark on Wooster's all-time top-10 list for the hammer throw, recording a mark of 134 feet, 5 inches. 

Sophomore Essaie Mezmur added a team point in the high jump by placing eighth after clearing a height of 6 feet, 1.25 inches. 

Next, Wooster's track and field teams will compete at Denison University in a dual meet on April 17.
