Herold Matches Single-Game Program Record with 12 Points in Wooster's 21-5 Win at Wabash
Junior now at 100 career points
Josh Herold match a single-game program record with 12 points for The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team, as the Fighting Scots clicked on all cylinders - scoring the first 15 goals of the contest, and finishing with a season-high 21 - during a 21-5 win over Wabash College in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener at Crawfordsville, Ind.
Herold, who had four goals to go along with his eight helpers, became the first Wooster (5-2, 1-0 NCAC) player to finish with 12 points since Steve Williams did so against the University of Mount Union back in 1983. Bill Seegar set the original program record against Ashland University back in 1971.
Additionally, Herold's eight assists were the most by a Scot since W Association Hall of Famer Jim Applegate's school-record nine-assist outing against Ashland in 1985.
Of note, Herold now sits at 100 points for his career.
The Fighting Scots scored quickly - just 1:03 into the contest - as Herold found Matt Parmelee. Wooster tacked on six more scores in the first period, highlighted by a hat trick off of the stick of Alexander Bloom. Also of note, Herold dished out four of his assists in the opening 15 minutes.
In the second period, it was Sam Kuhn's turn to get hot as the sophomore turned in a flawless offensive display, with a five-goal outburst in just over 10 minutes of action.
Wooster added three more goals in both the third and fourth periods. First-years Nick Churchill and Grant Merrill highlighted the second-half tallies with their respective first collegiate goals.
In all, seven different players found the scoring column, led by Kuhn's six. Three other Scots record hat tricks on the afternoon in Bloom and Herold, who each had four goals, and Aidan Crowe, who tallied three.
Of note, Kuhn's six goals are the most since Pat Henderson tallied six in an 18-15 win over Albion College on April 14, 2015.
The Scots were just as relentless on defense and in transition with 19 players recording a groundball and nine causing a turnover. Individually, Jack Gilio led the way with seven groundballs and four caused turnovers while Kuhn, Dan Gorzynski, Brooks Kiley, and Ethan Scully all scooped up at least five groundballs. Additionally, Scully added four caused turnovers.
Levy and Tyler LaCroix combined for 11 saves in goal.
Collin Brennan led Wabash (3-4, 0-1 NCAC) with three goals, while Steven Stark dished out two assists. Scott Purucker scooped up a game-high 12 groundballs for the Little Giants.
Wooster returns home for a 7 p.m. non-conference clash with Alma College (5-1) on Wednesday.
