Despite 400 Yards of Offense, Wooster's "Senior Day" Spoiled by OWU

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster piled up 400 yards of offense for the third-straight game, but its defense, after some early success, could not slow down Ohio Wesleyan University's attack as the Battling Bishops spoiled "Senior Day" at John P. Papp Stadium, prevailing 59-28 in the North Coast Athletic Conference teams' season finale on Saturday afternoon.

The two NCAC rivals' all-time series is now level at 30-30.

A couple of special teams' miscues by Wooster (2-8, 2-7 NCAC) helped set the tone. After the Fighting Scots forced a three-and-out on the opening series, they fumbled the punt with Ohio Wesleyan (5-5, 5-4 NCAC) recovering on the 21-yard line. Again, Wooster's defense clamped down on the Bishops before Nolan Kovach booted through a 38-yard field goal to begin the scoring.

After the Scots' first drive stalled in Ohio Wesleyan territory, they committed kick-catching interference on the punt, thus instead of pinning the Bishops deep, the visitors took over at the 32. Seven plays later, on 3rd-and-8 from the Wooster 30, Eugene Coleman got free down the right sideline and Dominick Orsini found him for a touchdown pass and 10-0 lead.

The Scots bounced back with a 12-play, 79-yard touchdown drive, converting three third-down plays along the way, including 3rd-and-8 from the Ohio Wesleyan 10-yard line when Gary Muntean connected with Adam Coppock in the left corner of the end zone.

Adam Coppock
Senior receiver Adam Coppock caught this pass for a touchdown late in the first quarter.

Near the end of the first quarter, Stephen McKinney gave Wooster further momentum as he forced and recovered a fumble near midfield, however, the offense was unable to take advantage.

Early in the second quarter, Orsini hooked up with Adrian Bishop for 45 yards of a seven-play, 77-yard scoring march, including a 17-yard touchdown to push the Bishops' lead to 17-7.

After the teams exchanged punts, the Scots were turned away on a 4th-and-1 play at their own 35, and seven plays later, Orsini hit Cheyne Lacanaria for a 13-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-12.

Wooster appeared that it was going to cut into the deficit, advancing the ball to the Ohio Wesleyan 12. Instead, two plays after Muntean went out with an injury, Deion Centeno returned an intercepted pass 71 yards to the 22, and Orsini sprinted through the middle of the field for an 18-yard touchdown rush, as the score suddenly ballooned to 31-7.

The Scots did gain a little momentum going into halftime, as Derrick Florence II returned the ensuing kickoff 67 yards. Muntean, back in the game, delivered a pass to Tyson Vogel over the middle and the latter burst through the Bishops' defensive backfield for a 31-yard touchdown, cutting the margin to 17 points (31-14) with :42 remaining.

Wooster started the second half with possession to no avail, and two plays into Ohio Wesleyan's drive, Orsini dropped the ball into Eugene Coleman for a 52-yard touchdown pass.

A pair of Scot turnovers later in the third quarter allowed the Bishops to take advantage of short fields as they had 35- and 23-yard touchdown drives. In between those scores, Muntean and the Scots went on a 10-play, 65-yard march, capped by a one-yard pass to Nate Huwar. It was the junior tight end's first career score.

Huwar notched his second touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, as Muntean found him in the end zone from 23 yards away to finish off a 12-play, 80-yard drive and bring Wooster within 52-28.

Ohio Wesleyan tacked on one last touchdown for the final margin.

The Scots' 400 yards included 303 from Muntean's arm as he completed 27-of-48 passes, four going for touchdowns. Coppock, in his final career game, was the leading receiver with six catches for 69 yards, and Vogel added 83 yards on five receptions.

Orsini countered with an efficient 14-of-20 passing day for 239 yards and five touchdowns, and he also led all players with 63 rushing yards. Bishop had 10 receptions for 150 yards and two of the scores.

Wooster defensive back Ethan Nichol closed his career with a strong performance, registering eight tackles, 3.0 of which went for losses, including a solo sack when he forced a fumble.

Also of note, Dan Misinay and Zack Moore were rewarded with their first career starts at left guard and defensive back, respectively, on "Senior Day," and also playing extensively were offensive lineman Taylor Bowen, defensive back Matt Keeney, defensive end Allan Latsch, and linebacker/defensive back Jake Vellucci, in addition to regular senior starters Coppock at wide receiver, Nick Flannery at center, Dan Gorzynski at tight end, McKinney at defensive end, and Nichol at defensive back. On the sideline with injuries were offensive lineman Paul Kelbly, defensive back Keith Lemke, offensive lineman Matt Margida, and quarterback David Smith.
