Kym Wenz of the Wooster women’s basketball team was named to the D3hoops.com All-Great Lakes Region Second Team, the popular Web site announced late Tuesday.

The Wooster women’s basketball team saw two of its players recognized by the North Coast Athletic Conference when the conference released the 2008-09 All-NCAC squads, as voted on by the league’s nine coaches. The Fighting Scots’ selections were headlined by a first-team selection in junior guard Kym Wenz, while classmate post player Kaitlin Krister found a spot on the second team.

The Wooster women’s basketball season came to an end when it faced off against third-seeded Allegheny College in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals. The Fighting Scots’ dreams were shattered when the host Gators handed them a 62-45 setback.

Junior Kym Wenz became just the seventh player in the Wooster women’s basketball program’s 45-year history to score 1,000 points when she knocked down a three-pointer with 8:32 left in the first half, but Earlham College spoiled the Scots’ home regular-season finale Saturday afternoon with a 63-55 victory.

Clinging to a two-point halftime lead at 21-19, Allegheny raced out of the halftime break scoring 20 of the first 29 points to open the second half, holding off a late Wooster comeback attempt for a 61-53 victory.

Aided by 48.1 percent field goal shooting in the opening stanza, including 75 percent from three-point range, Wooster posted a mark in the win column, having to hold off a late Hiram College comeback bid, as the visitors came out on top by a 67-55 count.

Plagued by a cold first-half shooting performance from the floor, Wooster watched as home-standing Kenyon surged out to a quick 6-0 lead during a rugged opening stanza for the Fighting Scots, propelling the Ladies to a 72-59 North Coast Athletic Conference victory.

Oberlin scored the final eight points, turning a 62-60 deficit with 1:33 left into a 68-62 victory over the host College of Wooster during women’s basketball action in North Coast Athletic Conference action.

Ohio Wesleyan held Wooster scoreless for nearly seven minutes in the early portion of the first half, building a 35-8 lead thanks to a 24-0 run during that stretch, and cruised to an 84-67 victory in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

Behind its best shooting performance of the season, coupled with a stingy defensive effort, Wooster managed a come-from-behind North Coast Athletic Conference victory Saturday over Wittenberg 75-67.

Wooster cut an Allegheny five-point halftime advantage (29-24) to two (31-29) with 17:20 left in regulation, but the Gators responded with runs of 15-2 and 14-5 en route to the 66-45 North Coast Athletic Conference victory.

TheWooster women’s basketball team rebounded from a four-point deficit just under eight minutes into the contest, taking command thanks to an 11-0 run and never looked back en route to a 66-50 victory over home-standing Earlham College.

Wooster watched as home-standing Lake Erie surged out to an early 12-0 lead, and could not recover as the hosts overwhelmed the Fighting Scots 68-43.

The Wooster women’s basketball team ended a two-game losing streak, erasing a three-point halftime deficit in the opening minutes of the second half, and holding off a late run by Hiram College in a 70-61 victory.

In the second meeting between North Coast Athletic Conferences foes Denison and the College of Wooster in the last 12 days, the Big Red utilized a big first half scoring output and cruised to 77-45 victory over the visiting Fighting Scots.

Wooster mounted a late comeback attempt against home-standing Ursuline College, but the host Arrows handed the Scots a 66-63 loss in non-conference women’s basketball action.
