Men Defend Team Title, Women Fourth at Dan Mullen Memorial Invitational
Robertson wins 8k and overall individual title
NEW CONCORD - The College of Wooster men's cross country team repeated as the Dan Mullen Memorial Invitational winners, defending their team title from 2023, while the women placed fourth overall. The meet was hosted by Muskingum University at Moorehead Farm.
The men's team won their third Daniel Mullen Memorial team title in the last four years, besting the field in 2021 and 2023. The men improved on their winning team score from a year ago, combining for 21 points and beating the West Virginia University Runners Club who were the runners-up with 46 points. The women's team was fourth of four teams with 74 points.
For the men, senior Drew Robertson claimed his first 8k course win and first overall individual title since the 2023 season-opening Wooster Invitational, breaking the tape in 26:59.2. Senior Will Callender was the runner-up for the third time in his career and the second time at this particular meet with a time of 27:39.0.
A pack of Scots finished in fifth through seventh places, respectively, to help the team to the title. Senior Eric Johnson was the leader of that pack in fifth place in a time of 28:48.4 while fellow senior Ben Nichols was not far behind in sixth place in 28:53.6. Junior Jack Schuller had a season-best 8k time of 29:20.8 to finish seventh.
On the women's side, senior Isabelle Dwyer led the way for the Scots with a sixth-place finish in a season-best 26:10.0. Sophomore Zanna Anderson, senior Elise Greenwald and junior Amy Gabrovsek worked together and crossed the finish line in 14th, 16th and 17th place respectively. Anderson finished in a time of 27:32.7 while Greenwald went 27:56.2 and Gabrovsek turned in a season-best 28:05.9.
Sophomore Colette Christopher capped off the team's scoring effort in 46th place in 35:38.9
While they didn't contribute to the team scoring total, juniors Joe Ahmann and Zane DeMercurio capped off a stellar afternoon for Wooster. Ahmann placed 11th in 30:12.0 with DeMercurio closely behind in 12th in 30:14.3. Top-seven for the women included first-year Jamie Tang in 47th in a season-best 36:15.1, toeing the collegiate starting line for only the second time. Sophomore Wyn Caudle was the Scots' seventh harrier in 29th in 37:34.0.
Wooster will race again on Oct. 18, at the JennaStrong Fall Classic hosted by Wilmington College.
